Jon Lancaster is a natural Walter with two trophies under his vest and our 5th panelist.  While Jon may seem like any other nice guy you'd meet at a fest, you never know when he may pull a piece out on the lanes.  Oh, and try not to bring up Viet Nam around him.

The Sobchak Simulator

− or -

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Rules

I had the fortunate luck to see The Big Lebowski in its original theatrical run in 1998 whilst living in Michigan, where I attended high school, and then college at Western Michigan University. After a move to the New York City area, I have found myself settled in Chattanooga, TN.

I'm not certain who in my life tipped me off to the fact that my skull and size was nearly identical to Mr. Goodman's, but I'm glad they did. I've been a huge fan of the film for years and years, and had actually costumed as Walter Sobchak when I attended Dragon*Con in Atlanta (THE mecca for fan-based costuming) for a number of years. I always got a great reaction – Lebowski is known far and wide by people of all backgrounds. And truly, that's why I love it so much.

After attending Dragon*Con, I strove to make my costume as screen accurate as possible, adding such touches as custom dog tags, real prescription shooting glasses, and a new vest over the years. Of course, it seems to be the shape of my head that helps tie the room together, as it were, and I just had to work on my facial expression and pose for the actual Lebowski Fest. It's still funny and odd having strangers ask me to threaten them with a pistol.

I attended my first Lebowski Fest with my special lady friend Meghan in 2010 at the 9th Annual LF in Louisville. I entered the costume contest that evening, and did ok, but alas, no trophy. Since that night, we've attended the 10th Annual LF, the NYC LF with the cast reunion (where I took second in the Walter contest), and the 1st Annual LF in Atlanta this past April, where I finally took home my first 1st Place Trophy for Best Walter.

I love Lebowski, and more than that, I love the people that loving Lebowski has put into my life. The fans of this film are such a creative, interesting, and disparate bunch that I'm truly fortunate to have gotten to know them. Meghan and I have made some wonderful friends in a short time, and that can be attributed to LF.

And I guess I'm fortunate that my skull is similar to John Goodman's.

I met JD out in LA last fall for Lebowski Fest where he won his first Best Dude trophy.  This guy not only looks like The Dude, he also acts like The Dude.

JD Lloyd is a relative newcomer to the Lebowski Fest circuit. A long-time Big Lebowski devotee, he and his family have hosted an annual Thanksgiving screening of the movie, sharing quotes and laughs with holiday cheer. Tragically (for him), he only became aware of Lebowski Fest a couple of years ago.

JD lives about 100 yards from the Dude’s actual bungalow location in Venice, CA.  Always a naturally “Dudely” guy, he prefers flip flops and shorts to “adult attire,” even in winter months. JD is making up for lost festival time by connecting with achievers on Facebook and channeling his inner Dudeness into appropriately Dudely duds. He’s having a lot of fun collecting and creating items for a variety of Dude costumes, which he’s known to sport all around Los Angeles, on occasions special or not. (As you can imagine, his favorite holiday is Halloween!)

This year’s 11th Annual is his fourth fest. He and his special lady friend first attended the 10th Anniversary fest in Louisville last year. He went on to win the best Dude trophies at the LA 2011 fest and the Atlanta 2012 fest. His goal is to attend at least one fest in all the major cities in the U.S. (If you will it, it is no dream!)

Today you get to meet our next two panelists, Roland and Denise.  Why are we putting them in the same blog post?  Cause they are each other's Special Man Friend (SMF) and Special Lady Friend (SLF) respectively.  This dynamic duo is one whose costumes I've been admiring for a few years now.  Most of this admiring has been done through Facebook photos, so I'm looking forward to hearing what these two dudes have to say about costumes in person.

Achievers Roland and Denise Pare are from Orlando Florida.  The 11th Annual Lebowski Fest in Louisville will be their 2nd fest in Kentucky and 7th fest overall.  Paul is the Lebowski trivia and line-quoting master of the pair while Denise is the mistress of costume design and creation.  Paul’s film knowledge gives Denise limitless inspiration for new and unique costume ideas.  Each has achieved in the modest tasks that were their charge.  Paul has won 1st and 3rd place trophies for trivia and the pair have won 2nd and 3rd place trophies for their costumes.  Their standard fall-back costumes are Walter and Maude but they have also appeared also as:

Meet Paul.  Paul is one of our panelists for You Don't Go To A Fest Dressed Like That, Do Ya? You can see Paul in the image below as the 2nd dude in the back row with his head tilted.

My name is Paul Niesen (known in other cult-film circles as Obi Wan K'Niesen). A son of Milwaukee County and graduate of the University of Arizona, I have been teaching English at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh since the early nineties (my claim to have been the first teacher to show TBL in an academic setting - Spring 2000 - has yet to be challenged). I discovered Lebowski Fest on their online forum in spring 2008. I have since attended six Fests in four different cities. An entrant in all six Best Dude contests, I was chosen by Chicago Achievers as His Dudeness on November 12, 2011. Topping that experience was witnessing my wife Yvonne rock the house in Milwaukee, summer 2012, as the Ralphs girl, with my son Matt, a notable Larry Sellers, at my side. His older brother Dan loves to quote, and he hates the Eagles.

When I think of Milwaukee, Wisconsin I'm reminded of the Brewers, Marquette University, that nasty beer smell when driving through and now...

The mayor, Tom Barrett, of this fair city has declared today Lebowski Day in honor of Lebowski Fest being in town this weekend.  Way to achieve Milwaukee.  The Dude Abides.

If you're interested in attending the Fest and need some info, check out Lebowski Fest.

Do you like to draw?  Can you draw characters from The Big Lebowski?  You might want to look into this contest we (the royal) recently stumbled upon.

The Coen Brothers character drawing contest is open from May 4 through June 1.  You can upload JPG/GIF/PNG images of 1MB or less to enter.  Voting starts May 25th.  I can already think of a few who should check this out.

Javier Bardem playing villain in Alacran Enamorado E-mail

Javier Bardem, that guy who haunts our dreams from No Country for Old Men, is returning to Spanish cinema in Alacran Enamorado (Scorpion in Love) which was written by his brother.  This is the first time Bardem has worked with a Spanish director since El Mar Adentro (The Sea Inside).  Here are some thoughts from the director Santiago Zannou:

"In my film (the character) is more realistic, not a wicked villain who wants to destroy the world, but an ordinary person. Those are the ones who truly frighten me, for having a type of ideology that separates people, that engenders violence," Zannou said.

If you're a fan of Bardem, I'd suggest checking out some of his other films including:

  • Collateral (2004)
  • The Sea Inside (2004)
  • Goy's Ghosts (2006)
  • Biutiful (2010)

There are just a few of his recent flicks I've seen and enjoyed.  I need to catch up on his older stuff.

Da Dude pizza E-mail

Six chefs are creating unique pizzas in Washington DC this week.  Chef Will Artley, from Pizzeria Orso, has created a pizza pie inspired by The Dude from our favorite film - The Big Lebowski.  The ingredients include:

  • smoked ewes blue cheese
  • ramps
  • mozzarella
  • olli speck

Without looking it up, I have no idea what ramps and olli speck are, but I'm always up for trying a new pizza.
