DC Poll: free starting event

Postby Thorsten the Traveller » Wed Apr 05, 2017 11:03 am

In the Dreamcard Rules, we have allowed starting the game with an extra minor item (3 instead of 2).

However, quite a few new resources can be played as starting event, in lieu of a starting minor item. Especially in the upcoming Necromancer set, there are many quests and Ringwraith stage resources that can be played as starting event. This can leave your starting company with few or no minor items. Therefore, we put up this poll:

proposed:
Any player may start the game with one resource permanent-event in play, which must be playable as a starting event (e.g. in lieu of a minor item); your total stage points may not exceed 3 at the start of the game.

pro: more options to build decks, especially active Ringwraith decks and ring decks.
pro: staring 1 card often frees up 3 slots in your play deck (if you need an early draw).
con: decks that do not need starting events will not benefit, and might even add (mission) cards without intending to complete them.
con: dealing with a limited number of starting minor items (or events) is part of the game.

I voted yes, been building active RW decks for ages, now they look powerful, but we wre still are just closing the gap to the other alignments, Hoarmurath, Khamul, WK, adunaphel and Uvatha all got pushed in this set (though we only made cards for 4 of them just yet), but it introduces many aspects that help these RWs to be played more active, of course Akhorahil is still better than most, but now, one does not have to play a dedicated magic deck to make an active RW worth the while

my 2 cents Nicolai

How about instead allow non-fallen Wizard, non-Dragon Lords, non-Lord players one free stage event similar
to fallen-wizards, Dragon Lords, and Lords having events up to 3 stage points to start play?
For events you are considering with this rule that have no stage points, maybe
add the cog symbol, but yield no stage points, so to make the card a stage point card.

or

Allow the free starting of one Quest card.

Wizards don't have stage events, and making them would water down the stage concept. So that would mostly apply to Warlords.

In fact Wizards don't have many startable events at all, which makes this proposed rule less useful for them.
They got: Rumours of Rings, His Beard Long and Forked, Towers Destroyed, Welcomed by the Lord and Lady, New Closeness to His Kin.
Of course, there are many more in later DC sets.
In The Necromancer they could start 4 quests: Contested Powers of Mirkwood, Dragon Marked in Red, Spies into Mordor, Strange as News from Bree.

One concern is that if we only allow a free Quest, people will include the quest just for the heck of it. This means for minions one may assume Mordor in Ruins is in play most of the time. With heroes having few startable resource events, this could still be the case (in DC games that include only FF/NE).

I voted "maybe."

It is true some put in cards to confuse the other player. I have started with Rumour of Rings with no intention to play rings.

Maybe have a few new "quest" cards that anyone can play; LIke a King of the World, but for 5 MP in each MP type?
or MPs if you tapped a site in all five types? Or if a character completes a hat trick (defeats strike, successful INF attempt, taps to play item, has a follower)

A solution to Mordor in Ruins is having it cost 3 minor items. so who will want to waste that if no need to use it or trouble an opponent?
May be not allow it to start at all?

If heroes playing Mordor in Ruins is too much trouble (the place was abandoned for about 2800 years) may be force the minions to put a card in the sideboard
to remove Mordor in Ruins from the game and never be played again. This will cost 1 slot to the sideboard.

About that sideboard pool: MECCG expanded the sideboard when expansions appeared; want to expand again to 50 slots?

I am open to allow a free starting event as you say when I play, rare as it is now, on gccg.
