The Coen Brothers insert many, many references into their films. One of the best parts of watching their work is figuring out what is true and what is made up. Going further with that, I'm also interested in what those people think who are referenced in these Coen scripts. David Brown from Yahoo! Sports recently ran into Sandy Koufax, the baseball legend, and wanted to ask him about his "involvement" with The Big Lebowski...
David Brown: Have you ever seen “The Big Lebowski”? The movie “The Big Lebowski,” the Coen Brothers movie.
Sandy Koufax: ... Yeah, sure.
David Brown: Then obviously you know you’re referenced in the movie.
Sandy Koufax: Yeah, I’m in five or six movies. I’m in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest," I'm in … so?
(And it wasn't just a "therefore? ..." kind of "so," either. It also was a "So, you're wasting vital moments of my 77-year-old life talking about some movie I wasn't even in?")
David Brown: Well, I just wondered if you were a fan of the movie, or if you got [appreciated] the reference, or if you thought it was was your “Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?” moment. Weren't you tickled?
Sandy Koufax: I don’t care. I don’t.
(The Viet Cong surrenders.)
David Brown: All right, very cool. Thank you very much.
Well, I guess we can close the file on that one. I love how Koufax used the term "conscientious objector" in the interview. It would be hilarious if he really did care, and that was his way of slyly getting a quote in there. I've always wonder what Bill Kunstler and Ron Kube think of their involvement with The Dude's arrest and interview with the Chief of Police of Malibu...
